Directions
- Identify a clinical certification used in a clinical setting. See Week 2 lesson for examples.
- Identify a target population of RNs in a clinical setting that is unaware of the benefits of certification on patient outcomes and leadership skills. Population needs to be two or more RNs from the identified clinical setting for which the certification would apply.
- Example:
- Certification: CNOR (Certified Nurse – Operating Room)
- Target population: Operating room registered nurses
- Setting: Operating room
- Example:
- Answer the questions below about your progress in the Direct Care Part 1: Assessment and Diagnosis assignment.
- Note: You may not progress to the Direct Care Part 1: Assessment and Diagnosis assignment until your target population and clinical certification has been approved by your instructor.
- Review comments about your target population and clinical certification from your instructor in Grades.
- If your target population and clinical certification are approved or not approved, it will be marked in the Assignment Comments.
- If not approved, follow your instructor’s directions for next steps. You may have to resubmit your information.
- After your target population and clinical certification are approved, see Week 2: Direct Care Part 1: Assessment and Diagnosis assignment.
- Note: You may not progress to the Direct Care Part 1: Assessment and Diagnosis assignment until your target population and clinical certification has been approved by your instructor.

Setting: Emergency Department
The target population of RNs: Two emergency nurses with 3-5 years of experience who haven’t pursued their CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) certification.
Clinical Certification: Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN)
The advantages of the CEN for leadership development and patient outcomes may not be completely understood by many RNs with only a few years of ED experience. The CEN exhibits advanced emergency nursing knowledge and abilities that could result in better patient care via assessment, triage, stabilization, and management. These RNs are outstanding candidates for future leadership positions in the ED because of their CEN, which also exhibits a commitment to professional growth and proficiency in emergency nursing. They get communication, decision-making, and critical thinking abilities from the certification that are essential for efficient leadership in a hectic, high-pressure work setting. While RNs with three to five years of experience are guaranteed to have a strong foundation in emergency nursing, they would greatly benefit from taking the comprehensive CEN preparation and exam. They may be thinking at options for career progression at this point in their careers, which makes the CEN’s leadership perks very pertinent.
Although I am aware that the target population for this position is emergency nurses with three to five years of experience who have not pursued the CEN, are there any particular traits that we should pay particular attention to within this group? For instance, are there any ED specialties (such as trauma, critical care, or pediatrics) where the CEN might have a particularly large influence?
Purpose
The purpose of this direct care project is for learners to apply the nursing process to assess if the nursing care provided by professionally certified nurses will result in improved patient outcomes. This is Part 1 of 4 in the Direct Care Project.
