During my early years as a nurse, I met Josephine through Sandeline, my friend, who introduced me to her.
4. Why did you select this RN? How do you think this RN is making history? Include details for each answer. (40 points)
Why did you select this RN?
The reason I selected this RN is due to my overall admiration for her work and contribution to the field of nursing. She came from Haiti with less knowledge of communicating in English; however, through her self-determination, she perfected her communication skills in school and reading books.
She quickly picked up English within two months, and through time, her English improved. Through her years in the United States, she was determined to give back to others and chose a career that would make her feel accomplished. She chose a career in nursing.
How do you think your selected RN is making history?
I had the honor to meet Josephine early on in my nursing career. I saw her continue to flourish in her roles of working in long-term care. She is already making history, having worked also as a nurse in a psych-specialized facility, working as a nurse in a hospital, and continued to grow her career as an Assistant Director of Nursing. It is because of her hard work and determination that she pushed me to be the best version of myself, and I have a passion for nursing today.

SAMPLE SOLUTION

There have been many advances over the course of history to shape who we are as nurses. Those who have come before us have gone through trial and error to put into place the realm of nursing we practice. Florence Nightingale who is identified as the “pioneer of modern nursing” for setting the foundation of nursing practice (Judd, 2013, pg.18). Due to her journals, others were able to gain insight on the practices of that time and methods that she had studied. This impacts all nurses today; it is from this foundation those who have come after established the standards we follow. Nursing has come a long way from being trained by physicians to now having schooling and even be able to practice as a nurse practitioner with only the oversight of a physician. Although it wasn’t called evidenced based practice at the time, Florence Nightingale, practiced some of the first evidenced based practice to determine what was best for her patients and what improved their conditions.

Due to the advances in education throughout history, I was able to become a registered nurse. It has impacted the care provisions I practice because I am able to advocate for my patients and treat them holistically. Through my practice a managed care nurse I can collaborate with physicians, agencies, and fellow staff to provide patients with what they need to live safely at home.
