HUM410 Sect1 Academic Success: Strengthening Scholarly Writing
Module 1 Overview
Introduction to Scholarly Writing
Scholarly writing in the health disciplines requires more than simply putting your ideas onto paper. It is a process, a path you lead the reader down to arrive at your conclusion. If that path is rocky or difficult to follow, the reader may give up and never reach the end. However, if the path is smooth and interesting, the reader will enjoy the journey. In Module One we will discuss how to make your writing smooth and interesting.
Effective writing skills are essential, whether you are working to advance your career or improving upon the professionalism in your current healthcare practice. This course is designed to ensure your success in academic writing at the baccalaureate level and beyond. In this first module you will learn the importance of word choice, and the difference between everyday informal language and the formal tone of academic writing. The tone is more serious in academic writing. Common slang and colloquialisms are avoided, as are the use of contractions. While some sentences may be more complex to promote fluency, most of the sentences are simple. Technical terms are appropriate, but should be explained and kept to a minimum. Appropriate sentence structure should always be used. That means when proof-reading your assignment be sure to check punctuation, verb tense, subject-verb agreement, and clarity in the sentence. Also, you should avoid incomplete or run-on sentences.
A problem many students face is developing a logical flow of ideas. Some questions to ask include the following: What is my objective? Is each main point clearly related to that objective? When selecting sources, have I taken into account my readers and their level of expertise? Have I arranged the material so as to lead my readers from one thought to the next with no gaps that they cannot easily bridge? Some examples of logical organization include topical arrangement, cause and effect, problem and solution, or chronological order. When adding sources to your essay, only add what is relevant. A particular experience may seem interesting, but if it is not relevant to your topic it detracts from your message.
In this module, it is important to understand the first three stages of this process. Stage one is to understand the task. It is helpful to pick out the key verbs in the assignment, so you know exactly what is expected of you. In stage two you begin gathering data. Ask yourself these three questions: What is the assignment? What do I know about the subject? What do I need to know to begin writing? The answers to these questions will help you to focus your research. Stage three is invention. Once your topic is chosen and narrowed, you can use one of the invention strategies in the textbook to plan your paper before you begin drafting.
To effectively communicate, ideas must flow in a cohesive manner. Brainstorming is the way to generate ideas for writing an engaging essay, creating a dynamic video, developing an informative PowerPoint, or any other type of project. Free thinking idea generation can come in a wide variety of formats, from utilizing software mind maps, creating a list of ideas, to simply using a thought bubbles on paper.
One of the key ways to ensure a logical flow of ideas when writing is to create an outline. Creating an outlining allows you to organize the ideas in a logical manner before committing to writing. This creates a plan for how to proceed with the project or writing.
If you have an electronic textbook, also called an e-text, has many features that a physical book does not have. The system can read the book to you, any highlights and notes taken while you read are easily found in within the notebook icon, and the magnifying glass allows you to search words and phrases throughout the entire textbook. One way to utilize the highlighting and notetaking tools are to pre-read your discussion question(s) and assignment and highlight topics which are related. Additionally, all good readers question their readings. As you read, create notes that question the text. And finally, readers who find connections to their own lives within the text are more apt to take their learning to long-term memory. Create notes which connect information to your own life.
Academic honesty is the cornerstone of any university. The term academic honesty relates to the moral integrity with which a student is upheld to. Specifically, when creating assignments and discussion questions responses it is important to give attribution to the original author. Aspen University utilizes the APA manual as the guideline for giving attribution to original authors. When someone doesn’t give attribution for someone else’s work it is basically saying the idea, concept, or work is yours. Turnitin is a service which Aspen uses to determine a percentage of content taken from other sources. Every assignment is submitted to Turnitin.
Discussion Question:
For this week, your task is to introduce your chosen topic in a discussion board post. This post serves two purposes, both to declare your topic to your instructor and peer and to explain your rationale for choosing this topic. Select your topic: In a 250-word initial post clearly explain the following:
- Discuss why you’ve chosen this particular topic. What draws you to it? Why is it significant to you, and what do you hope to learn or achieve by studying it?
- Discuss the topic’s relevance to healthcare: Elaborate on how your topic fits into the broader field of healthcare. This is crucial for ensuring that your topic aligns with the course’s focus.
Tone, style, and support: Your post should maintain an academic tone, however, this first discussion post does not need a reference source to support your perspective. However, your post should be formal, well-organized, and free of casual language and slang. It’s important to communicate your ideas clearly and professionally, as this reflects the standards of academic writing and discussion.

HUM410 Week 1 Discussion
The current issue of concern I will focus on in my research is how telemedicine affects healthcare availability. I chose this topic because Healthcare Information Technology has become essential to healthcare facilities. Telemedicine has been instrumental in filling the gaps in accessing health care, and it is a paramount area of research, especially in light of events like COVID-19. However, how technologies are modified and introduced into certain applications is of particular concern to me as I seek to learn how these technologies can complement the usual conventional approaches and performance. From this topic, I wish to gain better insights and diverse viewpoints regarding telemedicine as an innovation and involve the assessment of its benefits and or drawbacks. My research interest is how telemedicine can improve service delivery in vulnerable populations.
Telemedicine is an aspect of healthcare needs since it offers various solutions to today’s challenges like availability, cost, and efficacy. Such a system is most relevant for the rural and hard-to-reach regions where patients’ contact with health facilities is limited (Bashshur et al., 2020). Telemedicine offers the chance to get proper and timely treatment without covering long distances, which may be very costly. It may create many problems in defining the convenient modes of transport. In addition, it is possible to reduce the number of hospitalizations, improve efficiency, and enhance patients’ results through continuous monitoring and revisits. The integration of telemedicine in daily healthcare management paves the way for flexibility in the system and eradicates several challenges, such as pandemics and other barriers.
Hence, understanding telemedicine’s impact on healthcare availability remains timely and highly important in finding how the application of such technology can help build the healthcare system (Chunara et al., 2021). I intend to investigate this topic more thoroughly and try to add to the current body of knowledge concerning the ways in which the healthcare system can be optimized for the sake of the population..

Assignment Description:
Part 1: Requires two submissions to the Module 1 Dropbox – an Excel file and a Word file.
An important behavior of successful students pertains to establishing a weekly study schedule. This may sound overly elementary, but, to the contrary, high-performing college students know exactly every hour of their day/week and how they will use their time. A planner helps you visually organize your week, making it easier to see when you have commitments and dedicated time to study, time for leisure, and other activities. This visual representation ensures that you allocate your time wisely, balancing various aspects of your life.
Download this Excel Time Management Weekly Planner: https://classroom.aspen.edu/d2l/le/content/74399/viewContent/3792066/View and complete a weekly study schedule.
- Fill in the Excel planner with time blocks for work, sleep, school, family/friends, and free time.
- In a separate Word document, in 250 words, detail how you plan to utilize this schedule to tackle your workload effectively and optimize study times.
Part 2: Requires one additional submission to the Module 1 Dropbox – a Word file.
Invention Strategies help the writer brainstorm ideas There are four main types of Invention Strategies: Direct Freewriting, Listing, Outlining, and Clustering-Branching (Behrens & Rosen, 2012).
- Directed Free-writing – let your mind go and write spontaneously for a set amount of time, like 15 minutes or a certain number of pages. Think about a subject and just let what you think you know flow onto the page.
- Listing – make a list and several sublists of your ideas. Let your mind go and jot down words and phrases related to the topic. Listing the ideas should be a way of brainstorming just the ideas. (Once the ideas are on paper you can switch to the actual outline of your paper.)
- Outlining – the more structured version of lists. This would set the ideas in hierarchical order, with main points broken into subordinate points; allowing you to see the “outline” of your topic and paper.
- Clustering and Branching – start with the main topic or idea and brainstorm ideas that flow from that main idea. Clustering is writing an idea in a circle on the paper and adding new bubbles containing the subtopics/ideas flowing from the main idea. Pick the subtopics that interest you the most and make further bubbles. Branching is the same concept but instead of bubbles or circles, you have branches or lines.
Choose one of the four Invention Strategies above to explore and refine the healthcare topic that you selected for the Module 1 Discussion posting this week.
- In a separate Word document, in 250 words, describe your chosen strategy and rationale behind your choice and how you plan to use the selected invention strategy in future assignments.

Description of Scheduled Time Plan
Setting and following specific weekly routines is essential to dealing with responsibilities and finding the optimal time to study. By setting apart general time slots for sleeping, working, academies, meeting friends/family, and leisure, I ensure that all areas are well-spent, achieving more efficiency. I maintain a standard sleep pattern starting from 10 PM and waking up at 6 AM every morning to guarantee that I have adequate energy to work throughout the day. From 9 in the morning up to 5 in the afternoon, I accomplished professional engagements to avoid interfering with study time.
The 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, from Monday to Friday, is solely for school-related engagements. This enables me to study in a single subject área and meet deadlines for the various assignments. During these hours, I can also avoid distractions, disruption, and distractions throughout the day and night, as night is associated with rest, so studying during these hours helps retain information.
On Saturdays, I organize my study time from 10 AM to 1 PM so that I have an extra three hours in the week to review what we have covered in class or to do more rigorous work. This time also assists in reinforcing the knowledge that I have gained and preparing me for any assessments.
I make myself available for family and friends on the weekends; however, I allow myself time for social activities only from 5 PM to 7 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. This balance helps me to maintain good relationships with people I interact with and realize good health. Sunday from 1 PM to 10 PM is my free time, where I can do anything I like or just be idle, which balances my schedule. By following this visual plan, one can schedule activities properly, avoid too much strain, and thus live a hypo-stressed, everyday, productive life.
