LDR-463-O500 Topic 6

Assessment Description
Select two things you learned in your coursework at GCU that helped you most with your volunteer experience. Share how these learning outcomes benefitted you during your volunteer experience.

Sample Solution

One of the two things that have benefited me with my volunteer experience has been within my course content Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning in STEM ELM 462, in this course we were asked to create lesson plans and implement original lessons to apply to a grade of my choice, I used the skills I developed in that course to create structured lessons that applied to my situation during my volunteer time. Although I struggled at times to match content with students and make sure the dates and times were adequate, it gave me a broad sense on how it would be to create a lesson plan and execute it to its fullest while also creating content that was engaging. I was tasked to create a STEM lesson that applied to 2nd grade students to which I found the resources located in this class and ELM 462 provided me with rational explanations and expectations which acted as a guideline to benefit the needs as a student and as a volunteer. Time management has and will always be a struggle within my life, as a student and in my potential career, I can confidently say my Grand Canyon University has prompted me to do better as a human and student to be the best version of myself I can be. The staff and instructors provided various ways to use my timer wisely and make the most of what I have. As a father, husband, student, and a coach, my time is valuable and at times a snowstorm of events and situations that are at most times out of control. GCU and the courses I have taken thus far encourage numerous ways to take advantage of time frames and situations in order to be successful. I do at times fail, but it is nothing compared to the time before I was enrolled at school.

Assessment Description
After finishing this course and considering your future career, how confident are you in your career choice? Take the “Career Quiz” from The Princeton Review, provided in the topic Resources. Share your results and recommended career options. Discuss whether the results surprised you.

Sample Solution

After going through the full career quiz my results came around about where I had expected them to be. In the quiz, I scored Red (Expediting), Green (Communicating), Blue (Planning), and Yellow (Administrating) which I believe are a set of skills that fit me. How these aspects fit me and overall lead to my decision of career choice is the question at hand. As I have established previously I have always wanted to pursue a career in history as an educator or teacher hence how all of these skills fit my desired goals.

Looking into the presented skills I believe that planning and communicating are the skills that I had expected to see the most. These are the exact sorts of skills that I have improved on and practiced throughout the last few years. An educator in any subject or circumstance needs proper communication and planning skills to work effectively within the field. What I was a bit more surprised to see was administrating and expediting being part of my results. Although I do understand how these could tie into planning and organization skills so in the grand scheme of things it does make sense as being a good administrator goes hand and hand with planning skills as well. This has overall been a mix of skills that had expected alongside a few skills that I may want to think about more in the future. Summarizing all that I have learned not only from the quiz but the course as a whole which helped me solidify my career goals even further.
