I believe spiritual care is very important because it gives purpose to one’s life, and helps guide morals or principles to live by. Regardless of religious affiliations, most humans spend some time wondering what their purpose in life is, and I believe spiritual care helps to nurture that curiosity and also helps us find ways to give life purpose and reason. For me, spiritual care can be found in quiet moments in nature, through meditation, and self-reflection.
Bogue et al. (2022) explain that the Christian definition of spiritual care follows the concept that spirituality was given to humans from God “to be used for God-glorifying purposes.” Christian spirituality focuses on the relationship with God and those with Christian faith find satisfaction when their life is aligned with God’s purpose (Bogue et al., 2022). Spiritual care is important for every stage of life, and should not be an afterthought or considered important only during end-of-life care.
Harrad et al. (2019) discuss how spirituality is actually connected to health outcomes and personal wellbeing, stating that “spiritual wellbeing is associated with a number of positive outcomes including a greater tolerance of the emotional and physical demands of illness amongst patients, decreases in pain, stress and negative emotions, and lower risk of both depression and suicide.” I believe this highlights the importance of spiritual care and emphasizes the need to garner additional information from patients to ensure their spiritual needs are being met.

In terms of intervention and spiritual care, how do you support a patient facing an ethical dilemma, with consideration for their worldview? If you were that patient, what care would you want provided?

In terms of spiritual care for a patient facing an ethical dilemma, we must take a holistic approach to the care we provide and focus on our patients as a whole and not just the physical aspect. A nurse’s role is a multifaceted one, focusing on holistic care, and incorporating the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of patients (Harrad et al., 2019). One important way to show support is by showing respect. In order to provide empathetic spiritual care, we must respect the patient’s worldview, cultural background, and the way they view their illness or dilemma. The patient’s worldview and culture will give us a hint as to how they will most likely view the dilemma and what types of interventions they will accept. Providing nonjudgmental, compassionate care instills trust and allows the patient to be open and honest about their wishes. A person’s spiritual beliefs and values will guide day-to-day decisions as well as critical health and end-of-life treatment choices (Bogue et al., 2022). Learning how a patient copes with stressful or sad situations and anticipating their needs will be helpful. By gathering all of this information, we can devise a plan of care that is tailored specifically to our patients and provide education in the areas of need. Our jobs are to take care of our patients by administering medications and treatments of course, but we have the obligation to make sure they are educated and are able to make the most informed decisions regarding their healthcare and lives going forward. Lastly, creating a safe, calm, nurturing, and healing space for these patients will help them be able to think and process the situation they are going through, giving them the confidence to communicate and ask questions. If I were a patient facing an ethical dilemma, these are the interventions I would hope for from my nurses. A calm, quiet space and uninterrupted time alone to pray, meditate, and process what is happening would be very important to me.

Assessment Description
For this final assignment, you will be tasked to review your work in the Topic 3 case study and continue to analyze the case to best determine spiritual care interventions throughout their plan of care. In particular, the focus will be on the Christian application of the four principles, as well as appropriate options in providing a patient with spiritual care.
Based on the chart you completed and questions you answered in the Topic 3 about “Case Study: Healing and Autonomy” and reading the topic Resources, complete the “Patient’s Spiritual Needs: Case Analysis” document in a maximum of 1,500 words, in which you will analyze the case study in relation to the following:
- Patient autonomy
- Christian perspective and actions related to sickness and health, principles of beneficence, and nonmaleficence
- Spiritual needs assessment and appropriate interventions for all involved in providing care
- Accountability that would demonstrate an ethical manner that reflects professional standards of practice and person-centered care and participatory approach to care
Note: Participatory approach to care calls for involving stakeholders, particularly the participants in a program or those affected by a given policy, in specific aspects of the evaluation process. The approach covers a wide range of different types of participation, and stakeholders can be involved at any stage of the impact evaluation process, including its design, data collection, analysis, reporting, and managing a study.
Also, person-centered care is “empowering people to take charge of their own health rather than being passive recipients of services” (WHO, 2021). This care strategy is based on the belief that patient views, input, and experiences can help improve overall health outcomes.
Support your response using only the following Topic 5 Resources:
- Chapter 5 from the textbook Practicing Dignity: An Introduction to Christian Values and Decision-Making in Health Care
